May I have some salt please?

posted by Kerry-Anne

We found this kind of amusing when we were having lunch at the Waterfront the other day. The one on the left is the salt shaker - what gives you the idea that they have a problem with the sea air making the salt damp? Click for the larger version if you can't see what's in the "salt" shaker...

Is that rice in the salt shaker? Does the rice help keep the salt crystals from clumping??

Well, it's supposed to, yes. The rice grains apparently absorb the moisture. But I've never seen quite THAT much rice in a salt shaker before. We actually swopped with the next (empty) table, because I didn't fancy having my chips with raw rice for flavouring. :-)

I thought it was rice too. I have never seen that much rice in a salt shaker before, either. Amazing.
