Come a little closer...

posted by Kerry-Anne
This shot is especially for Abraham Lincoln, who inspires me every day with his exquisite wildlife shots and entertaining tales. This is one of the Egyptian Geese I mentioned in a previous post - they're rather precocious animals, and I managed to get this shot without too much zoom while my father was feeding him bread - or should I say, while he was snatching bread from my father's hand. Fortunately he didn't try snatching my camera... :)

Oh thank you, Kerry-Anne, for the beautiful picture. I have some tales about geese I could tell, but not now and not on your blog. I do appreciate your compliments and I do think this is a nice photograph of a very misunderstood animal. I never thought about geese being "Egyptian" but then we have "Canadian" who seem to like American ponds and lakes a lot as they are here all the time.

They also love corn if you shell it or take it off the cob for them.

I have not been bitten by a goose or by a duck but then I don't stick my fingers out for them to test. I do know they can use their wings and beat you half to death and we call that being, "flopped" by a goose. It is a terrifying experience for a youngster who are often feeding geese and are not much larger than the goose.

Thanks again.

Love your site, Kerry-Anne. Just one thing though - the goose pictured isn't an Egyptian goose but rather a domesticated grey one. There appears to be an Egyptian in the background though ... on the right hand side! EGs are smaller than the grey ones.
Look forward to each day's pic - new perspective on our beautiful city!

>Tracey, thanks for stopping by! :) Well... *blush*... shows what I know! I had just thought that this was a differently-plumed Egyptian goose - if I'd looked a little closer (how much closer could I have gotten?!) I may have realised how wrong I was... And you're right, there is an Egyptian in the background, bending his head down to pick something up off the ground.
