Self-sustaining plants

posted by Kerry-Anne
These plants appear to be growing in mid-air... They're actually attached to the roof with some kind of rope or cord, but I have no idea where they get their nutrients and minerals from. Rather curious, don't you think? This house is near the top of Kloof Street, by the way.

Are you sure these aren't trifods??? They are wild-looking plants aren't they.
We do have what we call "air ferns" in Australia, that grow off trees and apparently survive on the nutrients in the air. Maybe it is something similar??

Orchids are like that as well. They can attach themselves to trees or just about anything and just thrive off whatever is in the air.

Those plants do look curious though...like they came straight out of a jungle! :-D

They look like aloes to me (we posted a picture of some aloes a while back - but those had flowers and were actually growing in the ground), but I'm not sure. It's amazing that they can find enough goodies in the air to survive!
