Bronzefinger

posted by Paul
This statue-man at the Cape Town waterfront reminded me of Ian Flemming's Goldfinger - remember the girl who was painted in gold?

Our bronze man stood amazingly still for ages until someone dropped some money into a box at his feet. Each time someone paid him he would change position to a new pose - no smile, no direct eye-contact, just a robot changing stance.

I love these life-like type sculptures. Olivier has one in Evry too today.

Nice photo. Is this the real thing? If it is then we saw one in West Palm Beach several years ago.

Beautiful picture Paul.

This is a form of mime. These guys are absolutely amazing. We have them here in Durban as well - although not usually in bronze.

It's always fascinating to see how they can stand so still for so long, without even blinking. So much so that you think it is a sculpture, until you put a few coins in the box, and the statue moves towards you.

These people are so incredibly clever. I just don't know how they do it and also they get children trying to make them laugh, jumping up into their faces... gosh what a job. I'm totally fascinated by them.
