The Amstel from Amsterdam

posted by Paul
Amstel BeerAmstel is one of the more popular brands of beer in South Africa. I haven't made a clinical study of the facts, but I'd guess the four most popular (in alphabetical order) would have to be Amstel, Black Label, Castle and Windhoek.

Amstel beer was first produced in 1870 by the Amstel Brewery in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. According to a Wikipedia article, and to my surprise, it was taken over by Heineken International in 1968.

Although I find the beer a little bitter for my taste I do have many friends whose drink of choice it is. Perhaps my friends simply have a more sophisticated palate than I do...

Ok...I consider myself a beer connoisseur and Amstel ....not so much a good beer.....never heard of the other 2 but am willing to give them a try! Guinness is too heavy for me but I love Smithwicks.....also by Guinness....love Blue Moon.....really like any German beer ....made in Germany like Hacker Schorr I love your empty glass!

@neva I can't call myself a connoisseur, but I'll have to agree with you. I'm not fond of Guinness either and I don't know Blue Moon or Hacker Schorr. I do like Kilkenney though - it's lighter and not too bitter. I'm ashamed to admit it, but I've kinda also taken to Bud Light... I tried it for the first time in Las Vegas and it really wasn't bad (to my untrained taste at least).

My time in SA involved the four majors that you mentioned. I was sad to find that Amstel is only available as the Light option here in the US, and it's a very rare occasion when you find Castle - Windhoek and Black Label are almost non-existent. Thanks for bringing back some memories!

Being a dutchie myself i have Loaadss of experience with amstel ;-)
It is however funny to mention that the Amstel they sell in Holland tastes much different from the one that they sell in SA. The dutch one has a bit more of a charamelic taste to it (Hard to explain). My favorite SA beer is most definitely Black Label!! Too bad they don't sell it around here..

@Marco - thanks for the info. I'll be sure to try Amstel when I make it to the Netherlands again. Come to think of it, I remember seeing an Amstel sign in Paris...
