A long country road

A long country road
One of our readers, a Capetonian and ship's Captain stationed in South East Asia mailed me to say how much he enjoys seeing the photos that remind him of home. He also mentioned that he'd have preferred my previous photo without the Mini Cooper spoiling the view.

I'm curious to know which photo you prefer - this one, or my previous one?

Definitely this one, Paul. It reminds me of the long distance drives I hade in ZA, e.g. from Joburg to Durban where our car was often the only one on the street. The picture makes me want to go back. :)

Definitely the one without the car!! Why would you want a car spoiling such a beautiful view?? Love your site and your photos are absolutely stunning!!

Without the car, you can imagine yourself there on the road, soaking up the light and distance. With the car in the pic, you feel displaced… what a beautiful pic it evokes so much of the spacious and light and colours of south africa. Thank you.

Nothing against the mini but I prefer it without because the sense of distance increases with the eye drawn to the horizon instead of focusing on the car. I agree with Pauline that this one captures the light and huge skies of SA which I love so much – in fact, no, go back to the Mini, this one makes me sigh and we can’t get over until next year!

Thanks Steve, Ali, Robyn, Pauline and Caro. Clearly this photo wins the vote! I have to agree that this pic is prettier, but there’s something that I like about the photo which includes the Mini. They’re two very different types of pics and I guess I like the Mini one because I think it’s more unusual – not a typical “beautiful scenery” shot. Know what I mean? But, again, it’s all about the eye of the beholder, not so? :)

    Thanks for your comments!
