April Theme Day
posted by Kerry-AnneDoes anyone know what the letters "GR" stand for? I know it has something to do with the British Royalty, but I'm not sure exactly what, and can't seem to find any info on the Web.

I don't know anything about GR but it could be "GRRRR, don't touch to our old and nice red mailboxes, we want to keep them in place! Bon dimanche, Kerry-Anne.
GR stands for King George.
Very old Victorian boxes had VR for Victoria Regina and modern ones have ER for Queen Elizabeth.
Another red mailbox.
:))
cute
wow! King George! Now you know that, you can write "him" a letter ;)
Do these ever get so filled with letters that they have to empty them earlier than planned?
Our hero, Gerald! Thanks for the explanation. I like those old, deep pockets mailboxes.
GR = George Rex, as in King George. VR = Victoria Regina etc etc.
I think this might be a King George VI one - ie the present Queen's father. Doesn't look quite old enough to be a George V.
No, I've changed my mind after some research - it's a George V. The plain script of the GR....George VI's was fancier, and included a VI between teh G and the R.

New things to lean every day.
Nice photo, BTW.
It seems that Britain had a very big export business going! British mail boxes are everywhere.
Another pretty red mailbox!
Nice red one. The shop behind is red too!
Today we have seen many old boxes all around the world. How interesting :-)
Fantastic! Another one left by the colonials.
This is so British!
Your box certainly wins the prize for oldest and most imposing.
Quite impressive!

This is a Very old box at least 100 years the Body of the of the box is pre 1904 (short Door). But the door is later long Door cut down after George V come to the throne in 1910. for more info on post boxes try ma
>gerald & sally - thanks for the info, and sally, thanks so much for that interesting link! Isn't the Web amazing? - that someone in Australia could clear up the mystery of our postbox in South Africa which originally came from England!
>mailvan, just when your comment was getting really interesting, it stopped mid-sentence! Please come back and tell us more...
Kerry Anne - take a look at my blog from October 27 last year - same box, different continent! ;)
Yours looks happier - must be the climate, think we need to arrange an exchange programme!
lol mountainboy. Great comments, guys, I didn't know what the intials on the box meant either. Thanks a lot! :)
After seeing all the mail boxes around the world, it seems the British has left its imprint everywhere. :-)
If the mail boxes are red, they are former British colonies.
>mountainboy - actually, oddly enough, yours looks as though it's had a little more sun than mine... and it has a cool sidecar-thingy attached to it! :)
What a lovely post box! And I love a good mystery solved. Resourceful Gerald and Sally to the rescue. And I'm with Kala. . .Google is your friend!
