April Theme Day

posted by Kerry-Anne
Today is a Daily Photo theme day, and the theme this month is "A Public Mail Box". I spotted this one in Kloofnek Street on Friday, and believe it may well be the oldest postbox in the city. It's located outside the Kloofnek Grocer; the shopkeeper wasn't sure why it had never been replaced, but she did mention that we're not the only ones who've stopped to take photos...
Does anyone know what the letters "GR" stand for? I know it has something to do with the British Royalty, but I'm not sure exactly what, and can't seem to find any info on the Web.

66 Daily Photo sites are participating in the 1st April theme, "A Public Mail Box"; please use the links to below to visit them. Due to time zone differences and other factors, the theme photo may not be displayed until later if you are viewing early in the day.

I don't know anything about GR but it could be "GRRRR, don't touch to our old and nice red mailboxes, we want to keep them in place! Bon dimanche, Kerry-Anne.

GR stands for King George.

Very old Victorian boxes had VR for Victoria Regina and modern ones have ER for Queen Elizabeth.

Do these ever get so filled with letters that they have to empty them earlier than planned?

Our hero, Gerald! Thanks for the explanation. I like those old, deep pockets mailboxes.

GR = George Rex, as in King George. VR = Victoria Regina etc etc.

I think this might be a King George VI one - ie the present Queen's father. Doesn't look quite old enough to be a George V.

No, I've changed my mind after some research - it's a George V. The plain script of the GR....George VI's was fancier, and included a VI between teh G and the R.

All is answered here:

After seeing all the mail boxes around the world, it seems the British has left its imprint everywhere. :-)

If the mail boxes are red, they are former British colonies.
