The immense and brooding spirit

posted by Kerry-Anne
The area where Rhodes Memorial is located was apparently Rhodes's favourite spot for quiet contemplation - hence this pensive pose. The inscription above the statue reads:

TO THE SPIRIT AND LIFE WORK OF CECIL
JOHN RHODES WHO LOVED AND SERVED SOUTH AFRICA
1853 - 1902

The inscription below it reads:
THE IMMENSE AND
BROODING
SPIRIT STILL
SHALL QUICKEN
AND CONTROL
LIVING HE WAS THE
LAND AND DEAD
HIS SOUL SHALL BE
HER SOUL.

I wonder, sometimes, about words carved into stone. It used to be they were cut by hand. Hammer and chisel. I thought I would like to learn how to do that and I did. It is a hard job to cut into anything that is stone. Nowadays, they use everything from hand done to sand blasting. I wonder Cecil John Rhodes knows or cares? An excellent photograph that captured just the right amout of light to make it interesting.

It's amazing but when in Cape Town I’ve not heard of the Rhodes memorial. Well, maybe Rhodes and Rhodesia experiences were not particularly enlightening...
