May Theme Day

posted by Kerry-Anne
Today is a Daily Photo theme day, and the theme this month is "City Exchange". After much to-ing and fro-ing and um-ing and ah-ing, and even a minor scuffle or two, we eventually settled on this shot, taken last October in the medieval French city of Dinan - one of our favourite spots in Brittany.

Look through the arches of the viaduct, and you will see rows of stone houses lining the tranquil Rance River - being there felt like being in the middle of a jigsaw puzzle picture. The medieval part of the city is full of romantic cobbled streets and half-timbered houses - very, very different to Cape Town. We had a rather interesting and unforgettable experience at a chocolatier here - be warned that when they label a chocolate "sel et poivre", they mean it quite literally.

80 Daily Photo sites are participating in the 1st May theme, "City Exchange"; please use the links to below to visit them. Due to time zone differences and other factors, the theme photo may not be displayed until later if you are viewing early in the day.

Your first comment is coming from Brittany! As you know, I live on the south coats of the area but my father was born very close to Dinan where he has been at school for many years. In this part of Brittany, they don't speak Breton but Gallo (and often with a strong accent on the "r"!).

I wanted to write "coast" of course, not "coats"!

It is a beautiful photograph. It looks like the viaduct is very high up in the air and a crash would be fatal. Your concept is wonderful. Seeing the homes through the arches.

My Theme Day is of a city unto itself, with its own zip code, and a portrait of the "Peashooter" and the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Hope you like flying.

How exciting I have just found your blog thru my daily fix of Eric in Paris Daily Photo. Cape Town is one of the most beautiful places in the world and my holiday there (as well as other spots in SA) a few years ago was simply jaw dropping. Being an Aussi by birth (we live in Papua New Guinea now) I felt very much at home in SA. We all have some much in common - same love of the out-doors, an adventurous attitude, love our beer, wine,BBQs and especially sport. So sorry (I lie) we defeated you in the cricket but there is always next time.
Will pop in each day to say hi.
I have plans to start one here in Rabaul but am not that IT literate.

There I was, clicking your ling and preparing for a large case of homesickness, only to find...Brittany! Not a bad pic but I love your other shots of Cape Town - especially the one of the recent rain. Living in Scotland has made me a bt selfish - I feel better when I don't have to hear my family at home talking about the fab weather while I freeze my patukis off!

Love the reflections. Abe is right. It looks like the arcs are all the way up in the sky. So surreal.

>alice, thanks for stopping by - it's always nice to have a comment from someone familiar with the area!

>abraham, the viaduct IS very high up in the air. It's quite amazing to look at from the other side actually, from the riverside.

>kuanyin, the chocolate actually contained salt and pepper - and quite a lot of it too. We thought the name referred to the "marbled" appearance of the chocolate (light and dark mixed), but no, it was meant quite literally! A very interesting taste experience, I can assure you... and not one to be repeated. The pepper was okay (kind of like chilli chocolate), but the salt was a little surreal.

>jules, you're right, we do have a lot in common (you just play cricket far better than we do... for now... :)). My brother and his family live in Sydney, and we felt very at home when we visited them there in 2004. Australian people are very welcoming and relaxed.
Go ahead and start your blog! There are lots of people who'll be willing to help you if you get stuck, and it's really not so difficult to get something basic set up using Blogger. You can always tweak it and play around once you're familiar with it. It would be great to see a new city represented!

>good woman, as i said on your blog, it's all cape town from now on, promise. Brittany is beautiful though, and i can highly recommend it if you're looking for an alternative holiday destination (it's not too far from where you are now either).

>thanks to everyone for stopping by. Gotta love Theme Day... :)
