Food, glorious food

posted by Kerry-Anne
I had to do some grocery shopping today, so I thought I might as well show you where I like to shop. The entrance is below the sign that says "Woolworths Foods", and yes, you guessed it, the store is Woolworths. There are many branches throughout Cape Town - some branches sell only food (like this one), some sell clothing as well, and some specialise in homeware. I've been to Woolworths in Australia, but despite the shared name, it's a very different store.

This post is for Mandi in Tel Aviv, who mentioned that she's suffering from Woolworths withdrawal symptoms, and for Abraham in Brookville, Ohio, who previously pondered what stores we might shop at down here.

There was a Woolworths in Baton Rouge many years ago, that was well known for its lunch counter. One of my earliest memories is eating breakfast at that counter. Thanks for sharing the Woolworths in Cape Town!

This looks a lot like Wal-Mart here in Arkansas, U.S. I couldn't live without it. :)

I now live in Papua New Guinea where there are no decent food stores so this photo makes me very jealous. I do remember some supermarkets in SA but they seemed much more like delicatessens than our huge barn like structures - Woolies and Coles.
Enjoy - I have to live without many things I love!!!!

Oh, I miss Woolies. Waitrose and Sainsbury's can come close but are SO expensive that ususally I end up just drooling at their fridges and dreaming of home.

Thank you Kerry-Anne for showing me this store. The name sounded familiar because we used to have stores here named, "Woolworth." Those were more like a general store that sold everything but groceries or food items. They always had a counter inside that sold lunches, coffee, milk, soda pop and things like that. It was a nice store to visit when you were a kid with only pennies in your pocket.

Your store looks huge and probably has much more merchandise than any of those around Ohio ever had. Thanks for showing me your favorite store.

Ghana also has a Woolworths, but it's not much patronised--even by middle class Ghana, for the prices are way too exorbitant. Even the South Africans who troop down to Ghana have said so!

Hi Mandi, glad you found the picture! The new Woollies 24-hour food stop has finally opened up, so we'll pay it a visit and get another shot. :)
