50cc of speed

posted by Paul

Teenagers may obtain a motorbike license from the age of 16, though the license is limited to only 50cc. With the soring petrol price (currently 7.00 ZAR to the litre) and general traffic congestion, our cities and suburbs may see many more of these lower-cc motorbikes on the street.

Like any boy should, I love bikes - but, they can be really annoying at times, disturbing our quiet suburb by either buzzing backwards and forwards (sounding much like very really loud lawnmowers) or screaming down the road with 1000 cubes of brute force.

I'm torn between loving and hating them.

Oh boy do I know what you mean about this love/hate for bikes! I love them because they really don't add to the traffic.

But I hate them because of all the noise they make...and because they always seem to get through the traffic faster than me!Lol! :-D

I agree ann!!
What worries me too is the thought of 16 yr olds in the traffic!! Even though their bikes are not powerful they can still be involved and cause accidents because of their inexperience and youth!!! How scary!!
I know Sth Africa has a terrible road toll - are bikes are high statistic???

Strangely enough, from my experience, there are relatively few accidents involving small bikes. There seem to be far more serious accidents with large bikes... often not as a result of recklessness on the bikers part, but it seems that cars just don't see them, or drivers underestimate how fast the bike is going (not that they're necessarily speeding). I had my share of accidents when in high school, but nothing serious (luckily).
