What? No beer?!

posted by Kerry-Anne
There's apparently going to be a temporary shortage of certain brands of beer until new stocks of imported glass arrive in South Africa in July. As you can imagine, this has disturbed quite a lot of men (and a few women too, I'm sure) - especially since we're in the middle of the rugby season, and most South African men cannot watch rugby without a good supply of beer and biltong (we'll tell you about biltong another time...). Personally, I couldn't care less, because I really don't like beer at all. :)

Peroni (pictured here) seems to be the fashionable thing to drink here at the moment - what's the drink of choice in your city?

I am guessing the bottlers are not creative people. They could add a little green coloring to the beer and forget the importation of special glass bottles.

If you have not seen a big ant then it might be worth seeing my post this morning.

As I understand, the Dutch brewery that granted SAB the license to brew Amstel has withdrawn the license. The time delay is the time between the last locally brewed Amstel being bought and the first imported Amstel being available.

It remains to be seen if this affects the price of Amstel.

Abraham, maybe green beer would go down quite well for our upcoming rugby matches... :D

Dave, you're absolutely right about the Amstel (apparently it will also be back in the country in July), but the glass problem is a separate issue - apparently SAB just can't get hold of enough glass to provide for the consumer demand, and that's why they're waiting for imported supplies. Very interesting - I wonder (quite seriously) how much it has to do with our up-and-down sporting fortunes?

Love your blog, by the way! I used to have a Winnie-the-Pooh backpack that went everywhere we went, and he became the subject of quite a few photos. Actually, we probably have almost as many photos of toys doing things as we do of people... :D

A beer shortage? I know quite a few people around Joplin who just wouldn't be able to cope.

I don't know what the fashionable beer is here, but many folks drink Boulevard, a (somewhat) local brew. Of course many people also drink some of the most disgusting beers on the planet (Natural Light and Keystone).
