July Theme Day: The Colour Red
posted by Kerry-AnneThis is the oldest lighthouse along the South African coast, and was first lit on the night of 12 April 1824. This is a pretty dangerous piece of coast (red means "danger", after all), and a fair number of ships have run aground here through the centuries. The lighthouse became a National Monument in 1973, and is now the headquarters of Lighthouses Services, part of the National Ports Authority of South Africa.
There are 100 blogs participating in this theme day. Take some time to visit them, and see what's red all around the world:

this lighthouse looked really great in these colours! And the way it draws attention ;)
I don't think I ever seen a light house so square like this before. It's different from what I'm used to seeing.

Nice photo...and excellent information.
I think you are right about this being a moody photograph. The cloudy sky defines the atmosphere in more ways than one.
Thanks for braving the elements for our enjoyment of this photo. I love lighthouses.
Wonderful photo and a different style lighthouse!

Beautiful - I love it! I have a classic Wisconsin rural scene for Theme Day today.
I like this lighthouse. Is it that the office was built around the lighthouse in 1973?
Great interpretation of the theme. It is a beautiful light house.
Great diagonal stripes on this lighthouse. Very good post! I'm really enjoying my round the world tour of reds!
Interesting shaped lighthouse.
Nice photo and words ... your description of the conditions at the lighthouse bring home the reason why they were built in the first place.
