Bollards in Bo Kaap?

In our previous post we asked if whether or not you were able identify the object in the photo, and the place where the shot was taken. If you noticed that Devil's Peak formed part of the photo's background then you may have guessed that the area is Bo Kaap, and that the object of the photo is (what I believe to be) a bollard made many many years ago in Glasgow, Scotland (see the inscription on the enlarged photo). At the time I never gave this bollard a second thought, but considering it now, I wonder who placed it up top of this flight of stairs, and where exactly they got the it from. Perhaps it's from the era when the current Cape Town city was still under water, forming part of Table Bay? ;)

Wow....that certainly is very unique....I would have never been able to guess what it was....does make you wonder how it got where it is though.
highly doubt-worthy that this area of bokaap was under water. if you manage to do some geological work and maybe archeology...definitely it would prove the point.
But this area is sort of an interesting point since just below this staircase, which goes down quite a bit, there was the old horse park...if i could say.
Those houses above this bollard as u call it were the houses of the colonial officers ... most of them lived in the larger dwellings.
But my research is minimal and im still learning even though ive grown up in bokaap
Hi Anonymous,
I think you misunderstood the text. I never suggested that Bokaap was ever under water, but that the bollard was perhaps from the era when Cape Town was under water. At the time I wondered who had placed the bollard above the staircase.
Thanks for the info about the horses and officer's houses. I wasn't aware of this.
Paul.
