I thought the Puma was a cat...

posted by Paul
The first Puma prototype flew for the first time in 1965. This helicopter was developed in France by AƩrospatiale to be a mid-sized highly versatile aircraft for use by the French Army. The South African defence force has used the Puma for about as long as I can recall, and today we still regularly see them flying the skies of Cape Town.

Hello!

Actually, that's an Oryx, an upgraded Puma made in RSA.

Where I live (Portugal) the Puma was almost an institution, given the so many people in distress it rescued from the sea for 30 years (some 2000, if I recall correctly). In recent years, they have been replaced by the EH101.

An outstanding machine, the Puma. I already miss their sound overflying.

Congrats on your blog! You certainly live in one wonderful city.

Regards,

JQ

Joao>> Thanks for clearing this up - for years I've heard of the Oryx, but I've always seen "Pumas" in the sky. Now I know... ;)

They do have an awesome sound hey!? Thanks for the kind message,

Paul.
