And what exactly should I do?

Whenever I see a sign like this, I think, "Gosh, it's great that they're warning me, but I'm not too sure what I'm supposed to do now that I've seen the sign." (In case you're not familiar with this sign, it means: "Beware - possible rock falls.")Should I turn around and take another road instead? Not practical, no. Should I keep a lookout to my right, watching for large boulders rushing down the mountainside, so that I can take evasive action into the sea? Tricky and potentially dangerous - I might mistake a mountain goat for a boulder for instance, and plunge to an unnecessary watery death in my haste to get away from it.
Maybe they're actually just cruel, and really mean for me to drive this stretch of road with paralysing fear as my navigator. What do you think?

I say put the "pedal to the metal" and enjoy the curves. This stretch of road, known as Clarence Drive, lies between Rooi Els and Gordon's Bay. It's a favourite amongst motorcyclists for Sunday morning breakfast-runs, fisherman diving for crayfish, and Sunday drivers (including the occasional drunk one).
I tend to agree with you, Scott. It's a favourite amongst Mini Cooper drivers too... ;-)
I agree, what does that sign mean?
I think it's more of a "We told you so" sign.
Amusingly (well, for me at least), if the triangle pointed downwards, it would be "Give way to falling rocks"...sorry...
:-)
I tend to think of it as a butt-covering sign - something like "don't say we didn't warn you!"
On a more practical note maybe "drive cautiously in case the debris has already hit the road and you need to scream to a halt before it hits you"?
We often have that problem on the Groot River pass near Nature's Valley and it can be quite alarming.
Never yet seen a 'live' rockfall still in motion though :-)
That's the road from Rooi Els to Gordon's Bay isn't it?
Lovely scenery...just ignore the signs. :-)
Agreed.
I've always assumed it meant: "Don't be surprised that that giant boulder just crushed your car because we did warn you*."
*"Oh, and you can't sue us."
Yes I figured it was something to do with insurance..but the scenery's worth the risk.
Perhaps it means that it's ok to trip Afrikaans people? I jest...
