It's a Hop-On Hop-Off bus

posted by Paul
Hop On Hop Off For the past couple of summers we've been intending to take a trip around greater Cape Town on one of these buses - just to see what the city looks like from a tourist's vantage point. We've vowed that this will be the year that we do just that. Of course, it does help our resolve that Kerry-Anne's nephew and niece will be visiting us from Sydney for two weeks in December.

The Hop-On Hop-Off buses have two routes, a Red Route and a Blue Route, with the former being far shorter than the latter. The Red Route takes you on a quick tour through the city and then heads on over Kloof Nek, through Camps Bay, all the way back along the coast to the V&A Waterfront, and finally back into the City centre.

The Blue Route is far longer and takes you through the southern suburbs, past Claremont, Bishops Court, Constantia and Tokai, all the way through to Hout Bay, before heading back towards the City via the coastal road to Camps Bay, where it joins up with the Red Route.

It's going to be loads of fun with plenty of great photo opportunities!

Done that trip many times and we'll be doing it again in Jan/Feb. It really is a super way to see Cape Town and the outskirts and learn about the city from the commentary given.

Make sure you pick a nice sunny windless day and sit up on the top deck.

Nice blog!

I had so much fun on this bus. You need to set aside a day for the blue route and even then you can't hop off at every stop... but it was well worth the R100 I spent and fun being a tourist for a day, in my own city.

That's such a great way to explore a city! We always make sure to take such a coach whenever in a new city, the hop-on-hop-off system is so convenient and a good way to browse around and then get on or go back. If the guide is a good one it's of course even better.

We took the red line when in CT and it was lovely, so yes, I highly recommend doing that then...;)

In Stockholm there's a bus like this, I too have been thinking of playing a bus-tourist in my own town for some years now, one of these days... I do like to take the wonderful sightseeing tour under the bridges of Stockholm now and then though. Since this is a city built on water with a plethora of bridges and locks, very scenic tours even for us Stockholmers:)
