Jungle gym at the sea

posted by Kerry-Anne
According to Wikipedia jungle gyms (also known as climbing frames or monkey bars) are not very common anymore (presumably in the USA), as children were found to be injuring themselves by hitting their heads on the bars.

I guess we must have a more robust version of child here in Africa, because jungle gyms are still pretty ubiquitous in our parks. In fact, I think it's safe to say that almost every suburban playpark features a jungle gym among its attractions.

This particular jungle gym offers a pretty unusual view though, don't you think?

Yes this brings back memories but like the USA we don't see them in parks now which is a shame as the children so loved climbing and playing on them..Health and Safety in the UK seem to have taken a lot of our 'fun' away and so many things can't be done anymore - sad!!

This brings back memories for me...well, not good ones. I actually did a pull up on one of those when I was a kid and then slammed my throat into one of the bars, closing and severely damaging my windpipe.

But they sure are fun...

Here in the US you rarely see jungle gyms anymore. They were viewed as a health hazard as well as other common playground items and most of the playgrounds with metal and/or wood structures were replaced with plastic ones.

Not too far from where I live we had a cool wooden playground that they replaced a few years back because they thought that the chemical used to maintain the wood was poisoning the water table, such a shame; my family helped build that playground too, it was very elaborate and fun to play on as a kid.

@Dr. Food: That sounds freekin' painful. What is meant by "severly"? I trust it's all good now? :)

@Geoffrey Hedges: At least they were replaced... where the plastic ones any good?

@Anonymous: It's in Sea Point... between the public swimming pool and Three Anchor Bay.
