Fishing around the Cape Peninsula

Fishing boats
As a visitor to Cape Town, if you wanted to cast a line by yourself (without chartering a boat) then I guess it could be difficult to know where you may fish and where to purchase a fishing permit.

Our government's Marine and Coastal Management website has all the information that you will need to know: where you may fish, what you may catch, how much you may take home and what the permit will cost.

In general, licences currently cost between R40 and R70. In the past I've bought a licence from a local Post Office, but if you have any trouble figuring out what to do, don't hesitate to give the client call centre a call on +27 86 112 3626 - they'll be able to give you all the info you need.

Well this is one past time that I don't think we will be trying out on our visit...not keen on boats!!

Thanks for the link to the Post Office as it made for interesting reading...our Post Offices are going through a difficult time these days and many hundreds have been closed leaving the residents of small country communities having to travel much further for the services that are offered by the Post Office!

Hi Rick, thanks for stopping by, and thanks for the kind words. You have some fantastic photos on your blog too (you had me at the covered bridge pictures :) ), and I'll definitely be visiting more often.

Thanks again for another awesome post. The only problem I have with the recreational fishing information, is this: With the bag limit and size limit they only give the name of the fish. Well, i know a snoek, and perhaps a geelstert, but often I pull something out wondering "What is your name, mr Fish?". Do you know of a website that links pictures to these fish names?

Hi Carelj,

Thanks, and, you make an excellent point. I also have no idea how to identify fish... except, as you say, perhaps for Snoek or Yellowtail.

I don't have a chart, but I can tell you where to find our local fish and chip shop - they have a big chart listing all the fish.

If I remember, then next time I'm there I'll take a photo of the chart. :)
