Iced toes

Iced toes
These two ladies might look chilled out there on their lilo, but let me tell you, they are in fact CHILLED, if you sense the difference in my meaning.

The water at Clifton is just a little on the icy side. When I say "a little on the icy side", I mean of course that you might lose a toe if you step too hard on the way out. Durbanites, who are accustomed to the bathtub waters of their own coastline, are often taken by surprise by this, and can usually be quite easily spotted: they're the ones wearing 8mm wetsuits at Gordon's Bay (which, in case you're wondering, actually has very swimmable water indeed - by Capetonian standards, anyhow).

Clearly these ladies are braver than I - the longest I've managed to stay in the water at Clifton is about 30 seconds. And that was just up to my ankles. Nearly lost a toe too, on the way out...

Breathless at Moonstruck

<a href=
Moonstruck is a fund raising event organised by a local radio station, 567 CapeTalk, on behalf of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI). Held in February each year on Clifton 4'th beach, Moonstruck is an evening of music and fun - a date where friends and families get together to listen to good music and to share in a picnic on what must be Cape Town's best beach.

Today was extremely hot and there wasn't a breath of wind in Cape Town tonight. With the exception of cloud cover, it was the perfect night for Moonstruck. The very talented band entertained us with cover songs such as Piano Man, Hey Jude, Brown Eyed Girl, Substitute, Sweet Caroline and a brilliant rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody.

If you're in Cape Town in February next year, tune your radio in to 567 CapeTalk (Medium Wave, not FM), or listen to them on streaming audio to get details about Moonstruck 2009.

Is that really Table Mountain?

Is that really Table Mountain?
I pulled off Round House Road to take this photo. Round House Road winds its way around Camps Bay's side of Lion's Head, descending to Clifton.

This particular road has an exquisite view of Camps Bay, Table Mountain and The Twelve Apostles. Don't you think it's a bit of a strange view of Table Mountain? This photo make it look a little like Table Peak... or Table Hill. :)

See Round House Road from the air on WikiMapia.

The lonely seagull

The lonely seagull
It's been raining on and off today. I took a drive past Sea Point, Clifton and Camps Bay, stopping off at Clifton 4th beach to take a few photos. I've never seen Clifton 4th empty - with nobody bathing in the sun. The only form of life on the beach was this lonely seagull - I almost felt sad for it, but then realised I was also alone. :(

Llandudno – a truly awesome beach

Llandudno - a truly awesome beach

Llandudno beach is a few kilometres from Camps Bay and Clifton (closer to Cape Point). It's a spot that many surfers do - and all surfers really must - visit. Today (can you believe!) is the first time that Kerry-Anne and I have visited this particular spot. It was a really hot Friday afternoon (at around 17h00) and the beach was filled with people tanning, playing cricket and throwing frisbees.

The guy in the photo was running into the waves with his bodyboarding fins on. It was really funny (have you ever watched someone trying to run with fins on?), although I think his mate (whom Kerry-Anne said was watching me from behind) must have thought I was a freak - taking snaps of his buddy running through the waves.
