At the movies
posted by Paul
We seem to seldom make time to go to the movies these days, although I'd have to guess that we're not unlike many of you in this regard. Kerry-Anne and I ventured out recently to watch Paris Je T'aime and The Incredible Hulk - both on the same day. I'm now pretty sure that we won't be watching two movies back-to-back again.... whew, it sure was tiring.Going to the movies in South Africa can be an expensive outing, with a single ticket costing up to R45. Fortunately our medical aid believes that happy stress-free clients need medical attention less often, so they've struck a deal with one of the cinema companies whereby we're able to buy tickets for about half the regular price.
Now if only we had more time to actually go to the movies...

Tygervalley Mall, right?
FYI, movie tickets in America can be up to R100 (in New York)...around here (San Francisco) they are around R80. I could not believe how cheap it was to see a movie in South Africa! Consider yourself incredibly lucky! :)
Yeah i payed like 40 dollars / 320 rand to see that will smith movie with him lost on NY at IMAX in Edmonton mall Alberta, missing the tygervalley 9 rand on tuesdays movie special lots. I had the discovery thing worked out well if you gymed lots and you whatched movies, but yeah as a health plan that sucked. You should look into Oxygen ( old mutual plan ) they actualy pay out best for any medical illness ( being a doc i have reviewed alot of the schemes).

@rachel - Yeah, I remember being surprised at the high cost of movies in Sydney. This said, it's always difficult to compare the cost based on Rand/Dollar conversions. I think tourists to SA generally get very good value for their money... like as in cheap movies. ;)
@anonymous, aka whitecrow2603 - Thanks for the info - I've compared my medical aid against CMP and there's really no comparison. My medical aid is arranged through the corporate I work for, so it's challenging to change... this said, perhaps I should look into how to go about doing so and what the benefit could be.
Thanks for the tip.
@rachel - oh, yes, Tygervalley. Well spotted! I had to take the shot quickly - security get's figity when one starts taking photos inside the mall.
Ah those were the days, when we paid as litte as R45 for a movie ticket, the prices here in Sweden are the same as in US it seems, around R100 for a single ticket. Which is more than a bit too much for what you get...
And yes, in general we did get a whole lot of good value for money when we visited SA over a year ago, sigh, how time flies...
Just another addition to the list of more expensive places in the world. Of course everything is relative so you can't really do these direct conversions. Nevertheless, the cheapest tickets you can get in Dublin are €8 (R98). It goes up from there depending on the cinema.
Dyamn! Someone beat me to identify it as Tyger Valley. I guess I should read my feeds more often :)
