Cape Town storm: it's not quite Gustav, but still pretty impressive
posted by Kerry-Anne
We weren't quite as brave as the New Orleans residents who stayed behind to face Gustav: instead of heading out to storm-ravaged Kalk Bay ourselves today, we asked the crew from Zoopy to bring back a photo or two for us, since they're far more intrepid than we are. :-)This is not an indoor pool, no. It's the interior of Polana, a restaurant at Kalk Bay harbour, after huge waves struck the area earlier today. Windows broke, tables floated out into the harbour, and as you can see, the restaurant was completely flooded.
There are more photos here and here. The Zoopy crew apparently took plenty of video footage, so we'll let you know as soon as that's been loaded onto their site.
You can read reports of the storm damage throughout the Western Cape here and here.
Thanks to the guys and girls at Zoopy!
Update: There are some fantastic photos of the giant waves in Kalk Bay on Luke Hardiman's blog. You can compare those with these: Kalk Bay harbour when it's not stormy.

That may not be like Gustav, but it still is very impressive!!! Hope the weather turns better soon, your city is absolutelly beautiful under the golden sun! (I have some beautifull sunset photos taken from my room window at the Vineyard hotel! I will post them soon on my travel blog :-) )
I`m trying to figure out which restaurant this is. Not the Brass Bell, hey?
@JM, the weather looks a lot better this morning, but I believe there are more cold fronts on the way. Hopefully by next week spring will be making its appearance for real.
@Francois, it's Polana (below Harbour House). I've just edited the post. :)
Thanks, just had a look at the chandelier / light fitting and it`s not very Brass Bell, is it?
OMW, what a lot of damage!
Damn, what a waste of a brilliant venue. And guess what, you're no. 3 on google for a search for Cape Town storm. Not bad, KA!
Wow what a fantastic set of photo's that got taken and what 'brave/silly' people to be out there on those waves!!
What a lot of damage but thankfully no loss of life.
