Franschhoek - it's not all bad

posted by Paul
In yesterday's post I had a little rant about how un-French Saturday's Bastille Day celebrations felt to us. Now while I stick with that opinion, perhaps it's worthwhile mentioning that Franschhoek is actually a really nice little town, a gem of the Cape in fact, and a place that we really do enjoy visiting.

It's exquisitely beautiful, nestled among rolling hills and mountains. Although restaurants tend to be a little on the expensive side, it's still very much worth a visit - and you'd do well to spend a night or two in one of the many guesthouses in the area too.

When visiting, take time to walk around and experience nature as well as to browse the little shops, art galleries, and especially the small (but very popular) chocolate shop in the main street.

For a really great Franschhoek experience, try to make it to the Saturday morning cellar tour at the Pierre Jourdan Cellars. Usually the Cellar Master does this tour himself and clearly he loves the opportunity to show off work! Then after the tour take advantage of the great cellar prices for their fantastic Methode Cap Classique

Franschhoek is a lovely small town and a place we have visited on each of our holidays. When we return to Cape Town next January it will certainly be on our list for another visit and hopefully an over night stop in one of the guest houses.

Oh yes we've been and bought chocolates at the chocolate shop in the main street and will go back again!!

@natashia: Thanks for the tip, we'll make a plan to visit Pierre Jourdan Cellars next time.

@bev: There's a lovely protea garden just behinde the monument at the top of the main road. It's really cool and worth a visit!
