Swinging tyres

Swinging tyres
Yup, that's right, South Africans (and Africans in general) are pretty resourceful when it comes to reusing what others have discarded. In some way, I guess, were the kings of recycling. :) I've posted photos of swings made from tyres twice before, here and here - don't you love 'em?

Seesaws and playparks

Seesaws and playparks
I found this beautiful little fenced-in park very close to the popular Rafikis restaurant, at the base of Kloof Nek Road (map). Judging by the look of the old tyre, this seesaw must surely have been here for many years.

If you're ever in the area, stop for a moment to check it out - it has the most beautiful, huge trees - and in some way reminds me of Paris. It's not quite the Tuileries or Jardin du Luxembourg, but still, it's a very pretty part of the city.

Xhosa play park sign

Xhosa play park sign
I don't read Xhosa, but from what I recall of the English version of this sign, it reads something like: "Playground equipment only for children up to 14 years old".

Isn't it interesting that the kids in the sign appear to be white, but the text is written in a traditional black language? Perhaps the old racial divide has fallen away more than we imagine. ;)
