It’s just so beautiful!

It's just so beautiful
I think those are the words that I heard her utter - "It's just so beautiful". And, it is folks. These photos I take are mere shadows of how beautiful the Atlantic Seaboard is in summer.

You need to visit here.

Impressionist Sunset at the Sea Point Promenade

Impressionist Sunset at Mouille Point
I do so love summer, but the clear-sky summer sunsets just don't compare with the pastel colours in winter. Click on the image to see the larger version - notice the reflection on the stormy water. Beautiful hey?

Here's the photo I uploaded to Instagram at the time.

A view from Sky Bar at Cape Royale Hotel

Sea Point from the Cape Royale Hotel
On this beautiful clear-sky wind-free evening Kerry-Anne and I were fortunate to be treated for drinks while watching the sun set from the open-air Sky Bar on top of Green Point's 5-star Cape Royale Hotel.

Besides for the stylish-yet-unpretentious vibe, what's especially great about Sky Bar is the view. The Cape Royale Hotel is the tallest building in the area, which means that while sipping drinks you're treated to a 360° view of the mountains, ocean, and city. :)

We spent about an hour on the roof-top, enjoying the view, drinking cocktails, and eating oysters. We even managed to squeeze in an impromptu neck and shoulder massage, at Sky Bar, courtesy of the hotel's Equinox Spa (which was, for the record, pretty darn fantastic!).

In a follow-up post I'll share a little more about our dinner at the hotel's in-house Bistro 1800° restaurant, but for now click on the photos below and take a look at the transfixing view of Table Bay and the city from Sky Bar. Pretty awesome, heh?

And there we saw Bon Jovi

The Cape Town Stadium
So it's true - I'm somewhat of a Bon Jovi fan. There, I've said it, you may now lay on the ridicule.

Anyway, so yes, Kerry-Anne and I went along to the concert at the Cape Town Stadium, clutching our precious golden circle tickets; and my oh my - it really was a spectacular show. If you enjoy their music at all, even just a little bit, an never made it to the concert, I believe you should now be kicking yourself. :)

Tip: Our experience in the golden circle caused us to renew our resolve that we'll never again buy concert tickets for a performance at the Cape Town Stadium unless they're golden circle tickets. The sound really was incomparable to the mushy sound that we've too many times experienced in the seated area!

Beaches, models, and photographers

Beaches, models, and photographers
Clifton's beach is one of the favoured spots for pro, and amateur, photoshoots. I enjoyed a light picnic while watching my favourite series (on my iPad) and keeping an eye on the tail-end of this evening shoot. Several photographers, models, makeup artists, and other assistants were congregated on this section of 4th beach, racing against the setting sun for a few more awesome twilight shots.

This was a great way to spend the evening. :)

A radiant silhouette

A couple of silhouettes at sunset
Perhaps you've noticed that I like sneaking photos of people silhouetted against the setting sun. The outlines and lack of detail seem to let the photo tell a story; probably a different story for each of us, depending on personal experiences.

An interesting apparition at Camps Bay

An interesting apparition at Camps Bay
I'll be on vacation next week, and beyond all reason I managed to leave work early to head though to Camps Bay for one of the last gloriously warm summer days of the season. I say "beyond all reason" because for the last few years I've never managed to leave the office earlier than 7pm on the day that my vacation starts.

Anyway, all this is besides the point of this post's title. Isn't that an interesting apparition indeed? Any guesses as to what's happening in the photo?

A sun on the horizon

A sun on the horizon
It wasn't as dark at Camps Bay as this photo may lead you to believe. The intensity of the sun simply caused my camera to correct it's shutter to snap shut in 0.000625 seconds - so not to white-out the entire photo. Now that's pretty quick, isn't it? I can't really even comprehend 0.000625 seconds!

A one-day reprieve

Sunset
After the weekend's torrential downpours, we had a lovely, sunny, and slightly warm Monday. But, this is not set to continue - I just checked WeatherSA's site and they have an alert posted for the Western Cape: "Very rough seas, gale force wind, very cold, and snow". Not a comforting thought my friends, not comforting in the least.

Blue-sky night

Blue sky night
If you've seen the past few photos I've posted then you'll probably realise that I haven't been out much this week (which, in turn, is why I'm sharing another photo from my weekend visit to Three Anchor bay).

The street lights on the promenade were so orange that when I moderated the photo's hue the sky became this rich blue colour. But, I kinda liked it - which is why I'm sharing it with you. :)

A peaceful seaside evening

A peaceful seaside evening
I must have looked funny to those walking along the promenade as I crawled under the railing, camera in hand, and lay flat on my stomach on the edge of the high barrier wall. I could feel eyes boring into me while I precariously balanced my camera on the edge of the concrete slab, eye glued to the viewfinder.

On the rocks – Three Anchor Bay

On the rocks - Three Anchor Bay
It was low tide, so I took a walk out onto the rocks at Three Anchor Bay. The light had already fallen off a lot, it was almost dark already, so I had to expose the photo for quite some time to get it even this bright.

After spending 10 minutes out on the rocks, amidst the peaceful lapping of the waves, I realised that it was probably time to return to the promenade before the light disappeared completely and I ended up in trampling over rocks and though puddles on all-fours trying to find dry land.

Winter, though chilly, can be very beautiful in Cape Town.

Winter sunset

Winter sunset
We arrived at Three Anchor Bay (next to Sea Point) about 20 minutes after sunset. Even though the day had been cold and miserable, the cool air and clouds made the sunset especially beautiful. Lovely, isn't it?

A lifeguard stands watch

Lifeguard stands watch
He stood for some time, watching swimmers enjoy the last half hour in the water before the sun finally set. While watching the lifeguard watch them I wondered what drives volunteers to keep an eye over people who often don't even realise that they're there, nor appreciate the time that these heroes have offered up. Is it the camaraderie, kindness, a sense of duty? Whatever it is, it's awesome that we have people like this around.

Read more about the Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club, whose members watch over this beach, and the non-profit organisation Lifesaving Western Provice. Perhaps once you have you'll even consider becoming a sponsor. :)

Three guys on a rock

Three guys on a rock
As the sun set, for some time I stood on the shore alongside a lifeguard watching the three guys admiring the view from the huge granite boulder. Apparently it's quite common for people to misjudge the power of the water rushing between the nestling of boulders.

After several minutes the guys caught sight of the lifeguard, realised that it was getting dark, and headed back to shore.

The rich and their yachts

The rich and their yachts
There certainly are degrees of wealth. Some people can afford beautiful yachts, some people only to take a sunset cruise on one, while others are only able to watch from the beach.

I fit into the middle group, which (to be honest) is a fairly sizable group! In South Africa, like most other countries, we have a huge difference in wealth between the poorest and the richest. The good thing though is that it seems (to me at least) that the curve is flattening slightly. While we still have the very rich, and very poor, it seems like the wealth in the middle group has (over the last 10 or 20 years) spread out a little.

Or, fellow South Africans, is that my perception only?

Two girls silhouetted

Two girls silhouetted
Moments after I took this photo a large wave smashed against the other side of the rock that these two young girls were standing on. Click on the second photo below to see what I mean. Fortunately it seemed as though their cameras and cell phones, though a little damp, survived the spray. :)

Red sky at night, sailor’s delight

Red sky at night, sailor's delight
The ocean that you see here is the one that stretches out before the beaches of Clifton, and the road is Kloof Road. This photo was shot from the same location as yesterday's photo of the Twelve Apostles and Camps Bay.

We really do have beautiful sunsets in Winter.

Flat Stanley Lambchop in Cape Town

Flat Stanley Lambchop
Stanley Lambchop is a character from Jeff Brown's 1964 book, Flat Stanley. Stanley was a normal boy who got flattened when a bulletin board fell on top of him while he lay sleeping in his bed. Stanley survived the near-tragedy but was rendered flat - altered for ever.

Although one may imagine this to be a tragedy, it wasn't all bad because Stanley's flattened state allowed him to travel the world very economically - in an envelope. Cristin (class mom of her son's first-grade class in New York) sent Michael M's flat Stanley for a visit to Cape Town and this photo is from a small outing that we went on to show Stanley Table Mountain at sunset.

On the left, in the distance, is Table Mountain covered with it's well-known table cloth, a sheet of cloud that often covers the mountain. If you haven't seen her up close before, click here to see Table Mountain without its cloudy covering.

To the right of Table Mountain is Lion's Head (so named because from a particular angle it looks somewhat like a lion's head), and a smaller hill known as Signal Hill.

The sun sets on summer : 6#6

The sun sets on summer
Isn't this scene just idyllic? Imagine sitting on the deck of a yacht, sipping a cocktail, and listening to the gentle lapping of the calm Atlantic ocean against the side of the boat. At times like these it's difficult to understand why the Cape was called the Cape of Storms.

If you missed the previous 5 photos in this series, click here to jump to the beginning. :)

The sun sets on summer : 5#6

The sun sets on summer
As I explained in my first post of this series of photos, I'm a little behind on daily photos and trying as hard as I can to catch up. I'm posting this photo for this past Tuesday when it was unthinkable that Cape Town would ever see the warmth of summer again until the end of the year.

And there Cape Town surprises us all with a beautifully warm weekend filled with plenty of sun and warmth ideal for visiting the beach. Don't worry though, next week will see winter returning with all her chilly force. Brace yourself Cape Town - and remember to think of this weekend when you're freezing your toes blue towards the end of the coming week. :)
